Rug-cleaning van sets fire to house

MASON CITY - A fire originating in a carpet-cleaning van spread to a nearby house about noon Monday, sending one carpet cleaner to the hospital and causing in excess of $100,000 damage to the residence.

Mason City volunteer firefighters were paged to a vehicle fire at 12:01 p.m. at 1100 E. Chestnut St. Fire Chief Kevin Meyer said they spent more than two hours controlling the fire after it spread from the van to the nearby brick ranch.

A crew was cleaning carpets in the basement of the residence when a fire ignited inside the van and jumped to an overhanging house roof, Meyer said.

The flames quickly spread through the eaves and the attic space, causing about half of the roof to collapse, Meyer said.

"It's a total loss," said Sandi Cunningham, who had planned, with her husband, Kevin, to move into the home Tuesday.

"(The van) apparently exploded and caught the overhang on fire," Sandi said.

Coincidentally, Sandi drove past her soon-to-be home just as the fire was spreading from the van to the roof, she said.

"I was surprisingly calm and called 911," she said, adding the fire had already been reported.

Minutes later, after she relayed the news to her husband, "smoke was just rolling out of it," she said.

Meyer said no one was seriously injured during the blaze, but a member of the cleaning crew was taken to a local hospital after a high-pressure hose connected to the van struck him in the abdomen as he attempted to disconnect it.

"It was my husband's family home," Cunningham said of the house. "And his parents had lived there since 1959."

The house was constructed in 1958 and belonged to Kevin Cunningham's late parents, Faye and Bob Cunningham, until his mother's death in December. Her husband died six months earlier.

The Cunninghams plan to rebuild at the same location, Sandi said.

Meyer said 22 of his department's volunteers responded to the call and were joined by about 10 volunteer firefighters from Easton.
